For a full year, Stuart Buchanan painted Catterline en plein air, working from the Watchie studio and looking towards the South Row cottages and the sea beyond.

Catterline is a place with a remarkable artistic history. Joan Eardley, Annette Stephen and Lil Neilson all found inspiration here, working from the same Watchie and responding to its rugged coastline, changing weather and extraordinary light. For Stuart, the connection is also personal, stretching back to childhood visits to the village and his friendships with Stephen and Neilson.

In this new body of work, Stuart returns to the landscape with his own distinctive eye. The cottages remain familiar, but nothing else is quite the same. Across the seasons, changing skies, shifting light, restless seas and fleeting moments of calm continually transform the view.

Painted directly from the landscape, these works capture not simply what Catterline looks like, but how it feels to be there — the atmosphere of a particular day, the quality of the light, the movement of the sea and the sense of a landscape that is never quite still.

Seen together, the paintings form a visual diary of a year in Catterline: one view, endlessly changing.
